YouTube Monetization for Video Podcasts

YouTube pays video podcasts through several channels at once: ad revenue (AdSense), channel memberships, Super Thanks and Super Chat, YouTube Premium watch time, and the sponsorships you sell yourself. To start earning ad money you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Most podcast income, though, comes from sponsors and your own products, not AdSense, so treat ads as a bonus and build the channel that attracts brands.

How YouTube actually pays a podcast

There is no single "YouTube cheque." Money arrives from a handful of separate sources, and a healthy podcast usually mixes three or four of them.

  • AdSense (ad revenue): YouTube shows ads on your video and you keep 55% of what advertisers pay. This is reported as RPM (revenue per thousand views).
  • YouTube Premium: when a Premium subscriber watches you, you get a slice of their subscription fee based on watch time. No ads shown, still paid.
  • Channel memberships: viewers pay a monthly fee for perks like badges, emoji and member-only posts. You keep 70%.
  • Super Thanks, Super Chat and Super Stickers: one-off tips during premieres, live streams or on regular videos.
  • Shopping and affiliate tags: you can tag products under videos.
  • Sponsorships and brand deals: the big one for podcasts, and the part YouTube does not control. You sell ad reads, segments or full episodes directly to brands.

The first five run through YouTube. The last is yours to negotiate, and it is where most serious podcast revenue sits.

What you need to get monetized

You join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) to switch ads on. The main thresholds:

RequirementThreshold
Subscribers1,000
Watch hours (long-form)4,000 valid public hours in 12 months
OR Shorts views10 million in 90 days
OtherLive in an eligible country, 2-step verification on, no active strikes, follow the rules

YouTube also has a lower entry tier in many countries that opens up fan funding (memberships, Super Thanks) at 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days and either 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views, before you hit the full ad threshold. Availability shifts by region, so check the monetization tab inside YouTube Studio for what applies to your account.

For a Pakistani podcast publishing one solid episode a week, 4,000 watch hours is reachable inside a year if episodes are long (45 to 90 minutes) and people actually watch. A 60-minute episode watched halfway through by 8,000 viewers already clears 4,000 hours on its own. Long, watchable video is exactly why a proper video podcast setup earns faster than audio alone. If you are still deciding between formats, audio vs video podcast: which should you start is worth reading first.

What the ad money really looks like

Be realistic about AdSense. RPM for talk and podcast content in Pakistan is modest because local advertiser rates are lower than in the US or UK. A rough working range for a Pakistan-heavy audience is USD 0.30 to USD 1.50 per 1,000 views, sometimes higher if a chunk of your audience watches from abroad.

Put numbers on it. Say an episode gets 50,000 views at an RPM of USD 0.80. That is about USD 40, or roughly Rs 11,000 at current rates, for that one video over its life. Nice, but it will not cover a season of production on its own. This is the honest reason podcasters chase sponsors: a single brand deal can pay more than months of ads.

The flip side is that audience size and watch time built for AdSense are the same assets that win sponsorships. So the ad grind is never wasted, it just is not the endgame.

The real money: sponsorships and brand deals

For most video podcasts in Pakistan, direct sponsorship is the biggest line on the revenue sheet. Brands pay you to mention them, run a segment, or title-sponsor an episode, and you set the price.

A few ways deals are structured:

  1. Pre-roll or mid-roll ad read: 30 to 90 seconds you record yourself. Easiest to sell.
  2. Integrated segment: 2 to 5 minutes where you genuinely discuss the product or interview someone from the brand.
  3. Title sponsor: "This episode is brought to you by..." across the episode, plus logo on the set and in the thumbnail.
  4. Series or season deal: a brand backs a run of episodes, usually the best money and the most stable.

Pricing is often quoted as a CPM (cost per thousand views) the brand agrees to, commonly USD 15 to USD 40 per thousand for engaged niche audiences, or as a flat fee once you have predictable view counts. A video podcast that reliably does 20,000 views per episode can ask for real money per integration, far above what those same views earn in AdSense. To go deeper on rates and outreach, see podcast sponsorship guide for Pakistan and how to price your podcast sponsorships.

A clean, well-lit set on camera makes a difference here. Brands judge production quality before they pay, and shooting in a studio with proper professional video and cinematic lighting signals you are a safe place to put their logo.

Memberships, Super Thanks and direct fan support

Once you have a loyal audience, your viewers themselves become a revenue source. Channel memberships let fans pay a recurring monthly fee for perks, and you keep 70%. Even 200 members at a small monthly price adds up to steady income that does not depend on the ad market.

Super Thanks (on regular videos) and Super Chat (on live streams) are tips. They spike during episode premieres and live recordings, which is one practical reason to stream. If you run episodes live across platforms, you open up Super Chat on YouTube while also reaching people elsewhere; live streaming your podcast across multiple platforms covers how to set that up cleanly.

The pattern that works: build the audience with great free episodes, then give your most committed viewers a way to pay you directly. Fan support is small per person but loyal, and it survives algorithm changes.

Turn one episode into many earning assets

A single recording session can feed a week of content, and more content means more watch hours, more ad impressions, and more entry points for new viewers. From one 60-minute episode you can pull:

  • The full long-form video (best for watch hours and mid-roll ads).
  • 5 to 10 vertical Shorts (great for discovery and Shorts ad revenue).
  • An audio version for Spotify and Apple.
  • Quote graphics and clips for Instagram and TikTok.

Shorts in particular pull in new subscribers who then watch the long episodes where the real ad money and sponsor reads live. We break down the clip workflow in turn one episode into ten clips. If you would rather not edit, clipping and short-form are available as add-ons so you can record once and hand off the rest.

A simple path from zero to paid

If you are starting now, here is a realistic order of operations.

  1. Pick a focused topic so the audience (and future sponsors) is clear.
  2. Record consistently in video, ideally weekly, with watchable production.
  3. Publish long-form plus Shorts from every session to grow watch hours fast.
  4. Hit 500 subscribers and turn on fan funding (memberships, Super Thanks) where eligible.
  5. Reach 1,000 subs and 4,000 watch hours, then apply to YPP for ads.
  6. Once views are predictable, sell sponsorships at a flat fee or CPM.
  7. Layer in your own offers: courses, services, products mentioned in episodes.

Notice that ads come in around step 5, not step 1. The early work is all audience and watch time, which is also what makes every later revenue source bigger.

Frequently asked questions

How many views do I need to make real money on YouTube? For meaningful AdSense, think in tens of thousands of views per episode, and even then ad money alone is modest in Pakistan. Real income usually starts when those view counts let you charge sponsors.

Can a Pakistani creator get monetized on YouTube? Yes. Pakistan is an eligible country for the YouTube Partner Program. You need the same 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours (or the Shorts route), plus 2-step verification and a clean record.

Do Shorts make money for podcasts? Shorts earn from their own ad pool and pay less per view than long-form, but they are excellent for discovery. Their main job is pulling new subscribers into your long episodes, where the better money sits.

Is sponsorship better than AdSense for a podcast? For almost every podcast, yes. A single brand deal often pays more than months of ad revenue, and you control the price. AdSense is best treated as a steady baseline, not the goal.

How long should episodes be for monetization? Longer watchable episodes (45 to 90 minutes) build watch hours quickly and leave room for mid-roll ads. The catch is they must hold attention, so quality matters more than raw length.
