How to Write Podcast Show Notes

Show notes are the text that sits under each podcast episode. Good ones do two jobs at once: they help a new listener decide if the episode is worth their time, and they help Google and YouTube understand what the episode is about. Write them with a clear summary, a few timestamps, the links you mentioned, and the keywords people actually search for, and you have notes that earn plays instead of just filling space.

Most creators treat show notes as an afterthought and type one rushed line before hitting publish. That is a missed chance, because the description box on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube is often the first real text a search engine reads about your work. Below is how to write notes that work, with a structure you can reuse for every episode.

What are podcast show notes, really?

Show notes are the written description attached to each episode. On Apple Podcasts and Spotify they appear in the episode detail. On YouTube they are the video description. They usually include a short summary, a list of topics or timestamps, links to anything you mentioned, guest details, and a way to follow or contact you.

Think of them as the cover blurb of a book. Nobody reads a blurb for fun, but a lot of people read it to decide whether to commit. The same is true here. Someone scrolling through a podcast app gives your episode a few seconds, and your title plus the first two lines of your notes are what they judge.

There is a second reader too: the algorithm. Search engines and podcast apps cannot listen to your audio in any deep way, so the text you provide is most of what they have to rank and recommend you. That is why a thoughtful description matters as much for discovery as it does for the human reading it.

Why show notes matter for getting found

People search for topics, not for shows they have never heard of. If your episode is about starting a business in Lahore and your notes actually say that in plain words, you have a chance of showing up when someone searches that phrase. If your notes just say "Episode 14 with the team," you have no chance at all.

This is the same idea behind ranking your show on search engines, which we cover in podcast SEO and how to rank on Google and YouTube. Show notes are one of the main places that SEO actually happens. The words you choose decide which searches you can win.

Strong notes also help with sharing. When a listener copies your episode link to send to a friend, the preview that appears is pulled from your description and title. Clear notes mean a clean, tempting preview instead of a blank box.

The structure that works for every episode

You do not need to reinvent the format each time. Use the same skeleton and fill it in. Here is a layout that holds up across audio and video.

SectionWhat goes in itLength
Hook lineOne sentence that says what the episode is about and why it matters1 line
SummaryA short paragraph expanding on the hook, written for a human2 to 4 lines
TimestampsKey moments with the time they start5 to 10 lines
Guest infoWho the guest is and where to find them2 to 3 lines
Links mentionedEvery tool, book, site or product you named on airas needed
Follow and contactWhere to subscribe, follow on Instagram, or reach you2 to 3 lines

The order matters. Put the hook and summary first, because on most apps only the first couple of lines show before a "more" button. Front-load the good stuff.

How to write the summary and hook

Write the hook the way you would describe the episode to a friend over chai. Plain language, no jargon, and the actual subject named clearly. "We talk about how to price freelance work in Pakistan without underselling yourself" beats "A deep conversation about value." One is searchable and clear, the other is vague.

For the summary, expand on the hook in two to four lines. Mention the guest if there is one, name two or three specific things the listener will learn, and use the words a real person would type into a search bar. If your episode is in Urdu or mixes Urdu and English, say so, because people do search for that. Our guide on a bilingual Urdu English podcast goes deeper on that audience.

Avoid clickbait that the episode does not deliver. If the title promises a secret and the episode does not have one, listeners drop off fast, and drop-off hurts you more than a boring title ever would.

Adding timestamps that people actually use

Timestamps are one of the most useful things you can add, especially for longer interviews and video episodes on YouTube. They let someone jump to the part they care about, and on YouTube they create clickable chapters. Here is a simple way to make them.

  1. Open your recording and scrub through it once at the end of editing.
  2. Note the time whenever the topic clearly shifts.
  3. Write a short, specific label for each one, not "intro" and "main part" but the real subject.
  4. Format them as the time first, then the label, for example 04:12 Why most new podcasts quit by episode 5.
  5. Start your first timestamp at 00:00 so YouTube reads them as chapters.

Five to ten timestamps is usually enough for a 30 to 60 minute episode. If a recording is well planned and structured, this part takes minutes. Planning the flow ahead of time, as in our podcast episode structure template, makes timestamps almost write themselves.

Links, keywords and the small details

List every link you mentioned on air. If you recommended a book, a tool, or a guest's Instagram, put it in the notes. People will look for it there, and missing links is the most common complaint listeners have about descriptions.

For keywords, do not stuff them. Write naturally, but make sure the two or three phrases someone would actually search appear in your summary and title. If your show is about food, the word "food" and the city should be in there. One honest mention beats ten forced repetitions, which apps may flag as spam.

Finally, keep a consistent footer block with your follow links, contact details, and a line about your sponsors if you have any. Once you have built it, you paste the same block every time. How long should show notes be?

It depends on the platform and the episode. For a short solo episode, three to five lines plus a couple of links is fine. For a long interview or a video podcast, a fuller set of notes with timestamps and links is worth the effort because there is more to navigate and more keywords to use.

As a rough guide, aim for at least 100 to 200 words of real description for any episode you care about ranking. YouTube descriptions can run longer and still work well. The point is not word count for its own sake; it is covering the topic clearly enough that both a person and an algorithm understand what they are looking at.

If you record with us, our editing add-ons can include drafting show notes and timestamps along with your clips, so the writing does not pile up on you after every session. You can see what is included on our packages and pricing page.

Recording quality affects how easy this is

Clean, well-structured recordings make show notes faster to write, because the conversation is easy to follow when you scrub back through it. A messy, rambling recording is painful to summarise. This is one of the quiet benefits of recording in a proper room with good gear and a plan.

Timelapse Studio in Johar Town, near Emporium Mall, is set up for exactly this kind of clean recording. We run audio sessions from Rs 5,000 per hour and professional video from Rs 9,000 per hour, with up to 30 per cent off for monthly or long-term bookings. You can read more about the room and the setup on our studio page. Frequently asked questions

Do show notes really help my podcast rank? Yes. Podcast apps and search engines rely heavily on the text you provide because they cannot fully understand audio. Clear, keyword-relevant notes are one of the main ways new listeners find an episode they were not already looking for.

How long should podcast show notes be? For short episodes, a few lines and a couple of links is enough. For long interviews or video episodes, write a fuller description with timestamps and all the links you mentioned, ideally over 100 words of real content.

Should I add timestamps to every episode? Add them to anything over about 20 minutes, and always to video podcasts on YouTube, where they create clickable chapters. For very short solo episodes you can skip them.

Can I reuse the same show notes template? Yes, and you should. Build one skeleton with a hook, summary, timestamps, links, and a follow block, then fill it in each time. A consistent format saves time and looks professional.

What if my podcast is in Urdu? Write your notes in the language your audience searches in, which is often a mix of Urdu and English. Name the topic plainly so people typing those phrases can find you.
