How to Name Your Podcast (With Examples)

A good podcast name does two jobs at once. It tells a new listener what they will get, and it sticks in their head long enough to type into a search bar. You do not need a clever pun or a single perfect word. You need a name that is clear, easy to say out loud, and free to use.

Start with what the show is actually about

Before you brainstorm names, write one sentence describing your show. Who is it for, and what do they walk away with? A business interview show for Pakistani founders is a very different thing from a casual chat about cricket, and the name should reflect that.

Once you have that sentence, names tend to fall into a few patterns:

  • Descriptive: says the topic plainly. Think "The Pakistan Startup Show" or "Lahore Food Talk". Easy to find, slightly generic.
  • Personality led: built around the host. "The Ali Hassan Podcast" works if your name carries weight or you plan to build it over years.
  • Concept or phrase: a short phrase that hints at the vibe. "Chai and Chapters" for a book show, "Second Innings" for a careers show.
  • Niche keyword: leads with a search term people already type, like "Urdu Poetry Podcast".

There is no single right pattern. Descriptive names are easier to discover early on. Personality names age better once you have an audience.

Make it easy to say and spell

Say your shortlist out loud. If you have to explain the spelling, or if it sounds like three other words, drop it. People hear podcasts on the radio in their car, in voice notes, in word of mouth recommendations. A friend should be able to tell another friend the name once and have them find it.

Avoid these traps:

  • Numbers spelled two ways (is it "4" or "four"?)
  • Inside jokes nobody outside your group understands
  • Names so long they get cut off in app listings
  • Random punctuation or made up spellings that break search

Short and plain beats clever and confusing almost every time.

Check that the name is free to use

This step saves a lot of pain later. Before you fall in love with a name, run these checks:

CheckWhereWhy it matters
Podcast directoriesSpotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTubeAvoid clashing with an existing show
Social handlesInstagram, YouTube, TikTokYou want matching handles if possible
DomainA simple .com or .pk searchUseful even if you launch later
General searchGoogleSpot any awkward meaning you missed

If the exact name is taken but the niche is different and the spelling differs, you may still be fine. If another show in your exact topic already owns the name, pick something else. Fighting for the same name is not worth it.

Test it on real people

Names sound different in your head than in someone else's. Send your top three to five friends who match your target audience. Ask two questions: what do you think this show is about, and which one would you actually click? Their guesses tell you whether the name communicates. Their pick tells you what lands.

You can also test it the moment you record your first episode. Saying "Welcome to [name]" out loud in the booth is the real test. If it feels clunky in the intro, it will feel clunky every single episode. When you book a session with us at Timelapse Studio in Johar Town, that intro line is one of the first things we record, so come in with a name you are happy to repeat.

Lock it in and move on

Naming can swallow weeks if you let it. Once you have a clear, sayable, available name that your test group understood, commit to it and start making episodes. The show grows on the strength of the content, not the perfection of the name. Plenty of huge podcasts have plain or even slightly odd names that nobody questions now.

Frequently asked questions

Should my podcast name include a keyword like "podcast"? It can help discovery early on, especially for niche topics people search by name. But it is not required. If your name is strong and you describe the show clearly in the description, you will be found either way.

Can I change my podcast name later? Yes, but it costs you some recognition and search history, so it is better to get it close on the first try. Minor tweaks are fine. A full rebrand after fifty episodes means re-teaching your whole audience.

How long should a podcast name be? Short enough to fit in an app listing without being cut off, roughly two to four words for most shows. The goal is something a listener can remember and repeat after hearing it once.
