How to Be a Great Podcast Host: Interview Like a Pro

Equipment makes a podcast sound good, but hosting is what makes it worth listening to. The difference between a forgettable episode and a great one usually comes down to how the conversation is led.

Prepare, then let go. Research your guest and have a loose arc of topics, but don't script questions word-for-word. The best moments come from genuine curiosity and follow-up questions that respond to what was actually said.

Listen more than you talk. Resist the urge to jump in with your own story. A short, well-placed "why?" or "what happened next?" almost always pulls something better out of a guest than a long monologue.

Embrace silence. A beat of quiet after an answer often prompts the guest to add the most honest, interesting part. And keep your energy up, your enthusiasm sets the tone for the entire room.

When the technical side is handled by a crew, you're free to do the one thing only you can do: be present and lead a great conversation.
