Audio vs Video Podcast: Which Should You Start?

One of the first questions every new podcaster asks is whether to start with audio or video. The honest answer is: it depends on where your audience already spends time and what you want the show to do for you.
Audio-only is fast, low-friction and perfect if your goal is depth, long interviews, storytelling, or niche topics where listeners tune in during commutes and workouts. It's also the most affordable way to publish consistently, which matters more than production value in your first season.
Video, on the other hand, is a growth engine. It unlocks YouTube discovery, makes your guests more shareable, and gives you raw material for vertical clips on Reels, Shorts and TikTok. If building an audience quickly is the priority, video wins.
Our advice for most creators: start with a format you can sustain, but record in a studio that lets you add cameras later without changing your whole workflow. That way you're never boxed in by an early decision.
